Girls showrunners Dunham and Jenni Konner - Miller's former bosses - released a statement after the allegations emerged where they noted the importance of women speaking out over sexual assault yet relegated Perrineau's claim to "the three per cent of assault cases that are misreported every year".
Zinzi Clemmons, a writer for Lena Dunham's weekly newsletter "Lenny Letter", has accused the actor and writer of "hipster racism". In her long post, Clemmons disclosed that they two knows each other since they "ran in the same circles in college" and also had common acquaintances.
The author added that she had been "overcome by emotion" since learning of Perrineau's account, because it echoed a similar assault that one of Clemmons's friends had experienced in college, also allegedly perpetrated by a member of Dunham's group of wealthy and influential friends.
Then, like now, Dunham displayed what Clemmons calls "hipster racism", hiding bigoted opinions behind a veneer of sarcasm and humor and using the "it was only a joke" defense when called out.
You can read Clemmons' full statement below.
She gave an example of a girl in Dunham's circle who would use the N-word during conversations to be provocative, but when she was called out on it she would reply by saying, "It's just a joke". In her bid to carry her friend and writer's water, Dunham took one of the statistics used by women to criticize rape culture and weaponized it to discredit a woman of color's accusation of rape.
More earthquakes expected as Earth's rotation slows
Often times, geologists are limited to historical trends in data to predict the likelihood an natural disaster will occur. What they found is that roughly every 32 years there was an uptick in the number of significant earthquakes worldwide.
They said: "During the windfall of deeply necessary accusations over the last few months in Hollywood, we have been thrilled to see so many women's voices heard and dark experiences in this industry justified".
I would imagine Miller is now feeling the same way about Dunham as his accuser.
She explained that two editors at Lenny were incredibly supportive of her work, but has still made a decision to leave.
In her statement, she said that she was willing to "sacrifice some comfort and a little bit of cash" in order to "hold Lena accountable". "I now understand that it was absolutely the wrong time to come forward with such a statement".
"Every woman who comes forward deserves to be heard, fully and completely, and our relationship to the accused should not be part of the calculation anyone makes when examining her case", she added. "It was never addressed, and he continues to move in those circles and has a powerful job ..."
A representative for Dunham did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding Clemmons' claims. "There's no excuse for his behavior but he has called for an investigation and apologized to the woman involved", Clinton said in an interview with WABC radio host Rita Cosby on Friday.
