Purdue has the fourth-largest number of global students among USA public institutions and is eighth overall among the more than 4,500 public and private institutions, according to a report issued Monday (Nov. 13) by the Institute of worldwide Education.
The top fields of study at Ohio State for worldwide students include business, engineering, social sciences, biomedical and biological sciences, and mathematics and statistics similar to the national trend. More students around the world are taking advantage of multicultural learning.
For the third year in a row, the largest growth came from India, primarily at the graduate level and in optional practical training (OPT), which is temporary employment linked to a student's area of study (eligible students can receive up to 12 months of OPT before and/or after completing studies). "During the past year the Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research (CILMAR) trained almost 100 faculty on how to adapt their curriculums to help students increase knowledge of worldview frameworks, develop greater empathy, improve verbal and non-verbal communication skills, and develop greater emotional resilience". This number also includes recent graduates who obtained employment eligibility in the United States and who are still affiliated with the university. Some 45 percent of campuses saw a decrease in foreign enrollments, but 31 percent increased increases this fall.
The report prepared by the Institute of International Education, a non-profit, and the US Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, also revealed that the number of Indian students coming to the US has doubled over the last decade and now India is the second leading place of students, comprising 17.3 per cent of the total international students in the US.
