With many Americans - including many from the Kenai Peninsula - now serving, and with our area home to many more veterans, let's use Saturday's observances as a reminder not just to honor the service and sacrifice of our nation's veterans today, but to continue to work toward meeting the needs of veterans every day.
An average of 6,000 soldiers died every day during the war, and more than 21 million were wounded. 11 became a national holiday.

Most American holidays have gone through multiple levels of change along their way to being the holidays that we now celebrate and Veterans Day is no exception.
Originally, Veterans Day was called "Armistice Day", established November 11, 1919, on the first anniversary of the end of World War I. "The kids are here, the Flash of Crimson [band] always does a super job, so it was fantastic, and it is always gratifying as a veteran, to think, 'I wonder if anyone remembers the sacrifices of these guys'".
Then came World War II.
Retired Navy Captain Martin Lindenmayer, commander of Post 153, will serve as host for the ceremony, which will include an invocation from Monsignor Vitorio Guerrera of Saint Kateri Tekawitha Parish, followed by a short presentation about Veterans Day, a seven gun salute and taps. A war that had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation's history.

Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr. marked Veterans Day with the band Funk Cake, thanking veterans for their service. The first Veterans Day under the new law was Monday, October 25, 1971; confusion ensued, as many states disapproved of this change, and continued to observe the holiday on its original date.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, who's seeking the Republican Party nomination for governor, also gave $115,000 to Honor Flight clubs in Findlay, Cleveland, Columbus and Dayton.
The ceremony will be held November 11 at 11 a.m.at Veterans Memorial on Maple Street.
Committee members went through high school yearbooks, posted announcements at local businesses and veterans organizations to collect the names of those who served to add to the memorial.
