The Tokyo police on Tuesday arrested a man after nine dismembered bodies, including two headless, with their flesh stripped off, were found his apartment in suburban Tokyo.

The 27-year-old Takahiro Shiraishi, who lives in the apartment in Zama, south of Tokyo was detained by the law enforcers after they were left awe-struck about the incident. The body parts, found inside cold-storage containers and tool boxes, apparently belonged to eight women and one man.

The missing woman is thought to be one of them.

The local media report said the nine victims were allegedly killed and dismembered within a two-month period after Shiraishi moved into the studio apartment in late August.

Shiraishi is facing a charge of the improper disposal of one body but police are expected to seek murder and dismembering charges as well, the Associated Press reports. "I'm looking for someone to die with me".

An examination of security camera footage taken at Odakyu Sobudai-Mae Station, which is located near the residence, on October 23 shows the woman with the man.

In Japan, a low-crime country, it is the grimmest such case since a former employee of a centre for the disabled went on a knife rampage there, killing 19 people a year ago.

While Japan prides itself on its low crime rate, it is no stranger to high-profile violent crimes.

He told police his motives were money and sexual abuse, Japanese media reported Wednesday, but police refused to confirm the reports to AP. She had been missing since September 21.

Shiraishi told the police that he later invited the woman to come alone to his apartment, where he killed her.

According to The Asahi Shimbun, the brother provided the police with Shiraishi's Twitter handle, and investigators identified another woman who had been in touch with the suspect.

It writes Shiraishi was arrested earlier in the year on suspicion of "scouting" women into the sex industry.
