White House opposed vote on Israel 'annexation' bill

"It's fair to say that the U.S.is discouraging actions that it believes will unduly distract the principals from focusing on the advancement of peace negotiations". Intelligence Minister Israel Katz, a supporter of the bill, has said this would "ensure a Jewish majority in a united Jerusalem".

Israeli media have reported that the US Ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, had conveyed "misgivings" about the legislation. Israeli officials say around 12,000 settlement housing units will be given various stages of approval this year, four times the number in 2016.
