According to court documents, on Monday Mathews came to the police with his lawyer and said that he "physically assisted" Sherin with drinking milk in the garage of their house after she had earlier refused to drink it.
In a series of tweets on Friday Sushma said that she has requested Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi to investigate the adoption procedure followed while giving away baby Saraswati (Sherin's real name) in July a year ago. Mathews has been placed on suicide watch in an isolated cell within the facility. The accused has been charged with injury to a child, a felony punishable with a maximum 99 years in prison, the police said. The state government has given a clean chit to the adoption of three-year-old Sherin Mathews, whose body was found in a culvert in Texas (US).
The Dallas County medical examiner has not yet determined the girl's cause of death.
