In addition to the Heartbreakers, Petty has played on solo albums and with Mudcrutch and the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys (together with Bob Dylan, ELO's Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and George Harrison of the Beatles). CBS and Variety now cite TMZ reporting that says Petty is "clinging to life".

TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS: (Singing) Listen; it don't really matter to me, baby. "Life is short. Live it. Love u all".

From Paul McCartney to Chuck D, musicians are sharing their memories of Petty and expressing their sadness at his sudden death at the age of 66.

The veteran star had been found unconscious and not breathing at his Malibu home on Sunday night, as first reported by TMZ. He had apparently suffered from cardiac arrest and was taken to UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, where he was put on a respirator, according to reports. Later in the day after discovering that Petty was brain dead, his family chose to pull him off life support, spurring premature reports of his death. CBS News confirmed Petty's passing. "During the band's concert in Portland, Oregon, Chris Martin and Co. faithfully covered Petty's classic 1988 hit 'Free Fallin".

After recently playing a show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, a tweet on Petty's official account read: "Thanks to everyone for supporting us for the last 40 years!".

Chris addressed his fans saying, "In a minute we are going to play the best show we have ever played in our lives, but you know, it's a very unusual thing to consider about playing a concert on a day like today". "I think anybody should be able to pick up an instrument and jump around". Here, we're gonna do one of your songs.' I was hoping it would meet his approval, and he loved how we did it. We're all on the backside of our sixties. I woke up to my parents in bed me sleeping on a sheep skin rug on the floor this video was always on it was surreal to see. Simple as that sounds, it's a tremendous rush to this day to me to just make something happen. "With a little kid, that's a lot of time". Widely recognized by a younger generation of musicians as an example of what an engaged artist can accomplish in his field and beyond, Petty has come to represent the lasting possibilities of rock and roll.

"One of the best selling records we have right now is the new War on Drugs which owes so much to Tom Petty, you know what I mean".
