But five jockeyed for position in spots 50 to 80, including the University of Texas at Austin (second in Texas, 56th overall) and Dallas' Southern Methodist University (61st overall).
Furman University ranked tied for 53rd among national liberal arts colleges and fifth for best colleges for veterans in that category.
The University of Kansas climbed three spots and tied for 53rd among public universities in this year's U.S. News & World Report's "Best Colleges" rankings.

That ranking is up four spots from previous year. The School of Management is also highly rated, at No. 78, among more than 700 accredited schools.

The rankings are based on several measures: undergraduate academic reputation (22.5%), graduation and retention rates (22.5%), faculty resources (20%), student selectivity (12.5%), financial resources (10%), graduation rate performance (7.5%) and alumni giving (5%).
The College of Engineering is ranked 34th among public universities with doctoral programs, up from 41st a year ago.
The University of SC was tied for 49th among national public universities with the University of New Hampshire.
Princeton, followed by Harvard, takes the overall top spot. The University increased its vaunted first-year student retention rate, which is above the national average.
