Security features in the Fall Creators Update include a smarter Windows Defender thanks to cloud intelligence. In addition to software written for Microsoft's Mixed Reality API, they will also support the SteamVR platform, so a library of suitable games should materialize soon.

The Explorer features two-front mounted cameras for inside-out position tracking, meaning you won't need an external tracking camera like the Vive, Rift and PlayStation VR-the headset features a tracking space of up to 11.5 x 11.5 feet. Although presented as mixed reality, this platform is actually entirely virtual. The Windows headsets also incorporate sensor technology that Microsoft developed for its HoloLens augmented-reality headsets.

The update will be rolled out over a number of months, as Microsoft upgrades Windows 10 machines in phases. As such, buying one might come down to personal preference.

With the launch date confirmed for October, Microsoft is missing its very first deadline under the new system.
