Finally, Sony is the first OEM to launch a smartphone running on Android Oreo out of the box.

During its press conference at IFA 2017 in Berlin, Germany, Sony revealed 10 upcoming Xperia Android 8.0 Oreo updates. The old three piece construction found on the XZ and XZs has been replaced by a new unibody two piece setup on the XZ1.

The first thing you'll notice about the XZ1 Compact, is, obviously, how small it is. Unfortunately, Sony hasn't budged much on price: the Xperia XZ1 costs $700, just $100 less than the XZ Premium. There is 2700 mAh battery powering the compact and small device that comes with Quick Charge 3.0 facility. You also get strong energy efficiency despite the power on offer, along with support for Cat. Most markets will get 4GB of RAM, except for South America and the USA, which will get the 3GB model. Meet the Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact. The camera does offer 4K video recording capability and super-slow motion videos with 960 fps.

The camera is a single sensor with 19MP, f/2.0 phase detection and laser autofocus as well as a single LED flash. It means you can use the camera to create 3D scans of objects or people then share them, use them as live wallpaper or even get them 3D printed.

In addition to the XA1 Plus, Sony also showcased a new pair of wireless earbuds - WF-1000X. Without having used the tech firsthand, it's hard to say how well it works, but I'm doubtful that it's the mass-market feature Sony needs to shift more smartphones.

Other notable specs include LTE Cat 6 or Cat 4 - offering download speeds of up to 300Mbps or 150Mbps respectively (depending on area), NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, aptX support for better audio (alongside a SmartAmp with Clear Audio Plus) and a bottom USB Type-C port.

The XZ1 packs a 5.2-inch full HD, HDR-capable screen while the XZ1 Compact delivers a 4.6-inch 720p display.

Western Digital has also initiated legal action that threatens to derail any deal that does not have its consent. In the last few days relations between Toshiba and Western Digital have improved according to local reports.

An expected development, for sure, but the Xperia XA1 Plus is still a welcome sight for prospective buyers. There is also a 23-megapixel rear camera like last year's Xperia XZ, an 8-megapixel front camera and it too is IP65/68 water and dust resistant.

With a smaller screen and no HDR, the XZ1 Compact is potentially more powerful than its big brother. Within the 3D Creator app you can also choose the "Find More" button which takes you to even more possibilities available through Google Play, to explore a wider and ever growing 3D ecosystem.

At the front there's 2.5D Gorilla Glass 5 and there are diamond cut edges.

It will be available in Black, Snow Silver, Twilight Pink and Horizon Blue colors choice later this year.

On the imaging front, the XZ1 Compact has the same rear camera setup as the XZ1 with all the slow-motion and predictive capture goodness intact.

Alongside the new Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact, Sony announced the new Xperia XA1 Plus smartphone at IFA today. As we have mentioned earlier, the design principles justify Sony's typical moniker with a clean-cut yet flat design.
