Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi while inaugurating the Indira Canteens in Bengaluru, during his speech referred the canteen name as "Amma Canteen" on Wednesday.

It was this initiative that Rahul Gandhi had come to Bengaluru to inaugurate when he made his flubs, which are now going viral all over social media! Gandhi said the canteen is an endeavour to provide food at affordable prices to the labour class and poor people. A total of 101 Indira Canteens are being rolled out, serving breakfast at Rs 5 and lunch and dinner at Rs 10.

We want the poorest person in Bengaluru to know that in this city he/she can not go hungry.

He was also seen eating at the canteen in one of the pictures shared. The Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in Karnataka is aiming to push its populist agenda in a city where its main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continues to have a strong presence in terms of assembly seats.

They challenged the LTFRB to issue similar orders against erring public utility vehicles (PUV) like jeepneys and taxis. Meanwhile, the LTFRB said that it was set to release a memorandum circular by September governing TNCs.

Karnataka Chief Minister had announced this project when he presented the budget on March 15, this year.

Instead of mentioning Karnataka he said, "Every single poor person in every single city in Bangalore". "I think we owe this to every single citizen", he said. More will be opened in the remaining 97 wards from October 2 to mark the 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.

Though it was initially proposed to have 198 canteens launched by the Independence Day, the number was later brought down to 125 owing to constrains related in getting land for construction of canteens in all the wards. Launching of Amma Canteens in Tamil Nadu was the idea of state's former CM and former AIADMK head J Jayalalithaa. Fourteen kitchens will work round-the-clock to supply food to the canteens.

Rahul, who was among the first ones to have food at Indira canteen, said, "It is our intention that the quality of food is the same as the most expensive restaurants in Bengaluru".
