Three militants were killed while a top Hizbul Mujahideen commander managed to give slip to security forces in an overnight encounter in south Kashmir's volatile Shopian district.

Security forces have confirmed that the body that has been recovered was that of Yasin Yatoo, news agency ANI reported today.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation on Sunday following information about presence of terrorists in Awneera village of Zainapora area of the district. "Two security personnel martyred, while three injured".

Groups of people had earlier relocated to the encounter site and made repeated attempts to help the holed-up militants to escape the security dragnet, the witnesses and officials said. Our correspondent reports that the slain terrorists were identified as local Hizbul Mujahideen cadres. Cordon-and-search operations have begun in the village.
