Murphy is coming off a season that saw him play in all 16 games.

Murphy fell and twisted his left knee awkwardly in the first quarter of the team's preseason game against the Ravens Thursday night. Coaches have been pleased with how he's performed in practice. "He was really having a great offseason, then he followed it up with a really good training camp so far".

The fourth year veteran out of Stanford had a career year in 2016, totaling nine sacks and 47 combined tackles.

The team signed free agent wide receiver Jamari Staples and placed LB Trent Murphy on their Reserve/Injured list.

Murphy was already suspended for the first four weeks of the regular season for violating the league's policy on banned substances.

He admits it will be a unusual experience to line up at his old stomping ground in the colours of a different team, but says he will not allow sentiment to cloud his focus.

From a big-picture standpoint, however, this is only bad news for a defense that already was a bit thin up front even before Murphy was lost for the season.

He transferred to Louisville once it was announced that UAB's football program would be shutting down.
