Police say he used that same weapon to attack everyone he saw, including a fourth woman, 29-year-old Candace Murray.
According to police, Vanderhall was found sleeping in a auto within two miles of the crime scene and was arrested, police say.
Sunday morning he will be arraigned on three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
Using a hammer, the suspect allegedly beat and killed his mother - 58-year-old Lynn Vanderhall, his sister Melissa Vanderhall, 29 and Janel Simpson, 29 - allegedly striking them all multiple times with a hammer.
Authorities said Vanderhall's behavior had become more troubling recently, leading his mother to obtain an order of protection against him.
"When he came here last night and it looked like the doors were secured, he became enraged", Fitzpatrick said.

Bobby Vanderhall, 34, was charged with murder in the deaths of the three women after police found him sleeping in a vehicle nearby.
'These girls don't give problems, these girls just have fun, ' Simpson said.
Bobby Vanderhall had already racked up a history of arrests for sex abuse and DWI, receiving his latest charges in the murders on Saturday.
