In 2014, he announced he was undergoing treatment for Stage 4 colon cancer.

In a career that spanned three decades, Murray held positions with the Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and Ottawa Senators.

In three seasons with the Ducks from 2001-04, Murray presided over a team that reached the 2003 Stanley Cup Final before losing to New Jersey in seven games.

"The Bears are saddened to hear of the passing of former head coach Bryan Murray", the team said in a statement.

In 1998, South Florida coaches Jimmy Johnson, Pat Riley, Jim Leyland and Bryan Murray stand together with 10-year-old Michael Fernandez at the fifth annual Make-a-Wish Foundation of South Florida Sports Banquet & Memorabilia Auction at the Signature Grand in Davie. He has that uncanny ability to go into a rink and just recognize hockey players right away. "The GM part of it just came out of coaching".

"That was", Murray said last season, "as much fun as any of us had in hockey". Murray began his adult life as a gym teacher, and that translated well to coaching. He couldn't really get up and down the ice that well.

Murray coached the Red Wings from 1990-93, compiling a 124-91-29 record and leading the Red Wings to the 1991-92 Norris Division championship.

Murray was named the Senators head coach in 2005 and spent three seasons in that role before becoming the team's GM.

The 20-year-old looks ready for the challenge after scoring 26 goals while on loan at Championship side Bristol City last season. It seems that the first round of " Manchester City " fits in a good game tone and confidence in their abilities.

He last coached in 2007-08 and was Ottawa's GM until stepping down to an advisory capacity last season because of his health.

Not only was Bryan Murray recognized for his work by Sens fans, he was known for his work league wide.

"He sort of tried to take the pressure off the team by doing stuff and yelling and screaming at the referees and having fun with them to alleviate some of the pressure that we had", Laughlin said.

The Ottawa Senators confirmed Murray's death in a release on Saturday.

Getzlaf, who has become the captain and leader of the Ducks, also extended his "prayers and thoughts" to Bryan's family. "Thank you for everything Bryan".

"I owe a lot to Bryan as he gave me a shot and he's a big reason why I'm playing in the National Hockey League, " said Senators forward Zack Smith. He said Bryan Murray was as complete a hockey man as there is. When his fellow GMs honored him at their annual March meeting in 2015, nephew Tim Murray and others said they went to get a colonoscopy after learning about Bryan's diagnosis. "From that standpoint, he was tremendous. Touched a lot of lives". Coaching was his first love. "While his warmth and dry sense of humour were always evident, they were accompanied by the fiery competitiveness and determination that were his trademarks".

"As we mourn Bryan's passing, we celebrate his many contributions to the game - as well as his courage".
