Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, says that Democrats won't rule out funding anti-abortion candidates in red parts of the country.

Mitchell Stille, who oversees campaigns for NARAL Pro-Choice America, said: "Throwing weight behind anti-choice candidates is bad politics that will lead to worse policy".

The pro-reproductive rights organization EMILY's List, which works to get pro-choice women elected to public office, didn't outright condemn the comments, but hinted that pro-life candidates will not receive its support, regardless of party affiliation.

"As progressives, we stand united in the belief that a woman's autonomy over her own body is not a secondary issue or a "social issue", but rather a human right and a necessity in order to attain and preserve economic security in her life". While they are likely to gain seats in the House, winning back the majority looks to be more hard. The devastating loss of the presidential election to Donald Trump has left the Party searching for ways to not only keep their base voters, but to attract new voters who might otherwise cast votes for Republican candidates.

There are already some Democrats who oppose abortion, though they are unusual.

Luján contends that the Democrats have to cast a wider net if they hope to take back control of the House of Representatives. We'll need a broad coalition to get that done. Bob Casey (D-Pa.), who is up for re-election next year in a state that Trump won.

"There is not a litmus test for Democratic candidates", Rep. "We know we can not have a real conversation about economic security that does not include the ability to decide if, when, and how to raise a family", the abortion rights coalition writes. In a May poll conducted by YouGov, just 28 percent of Democrats said the party should only back pro-choice candidates.

"All I know is for myself". "Most of those people - my family, extended family - are not pro-choice. I am strongly pro-choice, and I will fight", Ms. Warren, Massachusetts Democrat, told the Huffington Post at the time.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (R) with Vermont Sen.

Despite the backlash from the pro-choice wing of the party, Sen.

"At a time when women's rights are under assault from the White House, the Republican Congress, and in states across the country. we must speak up for this principle as loudly as ever and with one voice".

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the DCCC counterpart in the Senate, has also indicated it would not exclude anti-choice candidates in next year's election.

"I understand not everyone supports abortion", she continued, "but you don't have to put party money behind candidates who will take access away".

Many said Perez was imposing a litmus test on abortion for future Democratic candidates, but other Democratic leaders denied that support of abortion was key to being a member of the party.

Perez's statement was provoked by criticism of the Democratic Party's support for Heath Mello, a Democratic candidate for mayor of Omaha who has a long history of sponsoring anti-choice legislation in the Nebraska legislature.

"They can have all of the "unity tours" and slogan rollouts they want, but the Democrats' internal divisions are going to cost them even more elections going forward", Ahrens said in a statement.
