'We were generally faultless, ' Hamilton said after crowd-surfing with the Silverstone fans at his home race.

An aborted start due to a stationary Renault on the track meant that the whole field was forced to take an extra formation lap before the lights went out.

Courtesy of his victory, Hamilton has closed the gap to title leader Sebastian Vettel to just one point - with 250 still to play for at the halfway stage of the season.

Hamilton led from lights to flag, crossing the line 14 seconds ahead of Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen completing the podium.

As the race restarted, Raikkonen was unable to keep up with Hamilton's Mercedes, but Vettel was pressuring Verstappen.

Hamilton became only the third driver, after his late compatriot Jim Clark and Frenchman Alain Prost, to win the British Grand Prix five times and the first to take four successive victories at Silverstone. Vettel, his brakes smoking on the grid, lost position to Red Bull's Max Verstappen and fell to fourth.

FIA rules dictate that a gearbox must last six consecutive events, but if a driver does not finish a race, they are allowed to fit a fresh unit for their next event.

What too is a factor at the British Grand Prix is the overwhelming support for their home heroes and for Lewis Hamilton, there has never been a more adored driver.

Raikkonen's tyre tread appeared to come apart with two laps to go, while Vettel suffered a total failure one lap later.

"I can't say right now whether I can pull away. Now the plan is to win the championship". Questions were raised about his commitment to Formula One, with some reports suggesting that there were underlying tensions between Mercedes and Hamilton.

"It's a feeling I can't really describe", added Hamilton, 32, who had attracted criticism in the build up to the race for being the only driver to miss the F1 Live demonstration through the streets of London. I think the time he put in at the end was very strong. Sergio Perez secured seventh for Force India ahead of teammate Esteban Ocon, the McLaren of Stoffel Vandoorne and Grosjean's impeded Haas.

Later Vettel was able to undercut the Red Bull during the pitstops. I feel we've grown together in a really positive year, and Valtteri on board has brought a lot of positivity to the team and dispelled a lot of negativity we had before.
