The tweet came just hours after the president revealed he did not record his private conversations with Comey, the Daily Caller noted.
"Lordy I hope there are tapes", Comey said when he testified before a Senate committee, because he believed that accurate recordings of his conversations with Trump would support his contention that the President had pressured him on the Russian Federation matters.
Trump never specified in the interview which part of Comey's story may have changed, and the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director has only offered his story publicly once, in testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Az) said the "integrity of his appointment" was in question due to Mueller's friendship with ousted FBI Director James Comey. Comey has suggested that the tweet prompted him to ask an associate to release information to The New York Times.
"I think it was pretty clear in that statement that he hoped for his sake' that tapes existed", Sanders added.
The absence of recordings nearly certainly elevates in significance to investigators the notes made by Comey at the time. He suggested in a Friday interview that he floated the idea of tapes to pressure Comey to keep his story straight when he appeared to testify before a Senate committee about the Russian Federation probe.

Trump's choice of words suggests his initial speculation may have referred to the possibility that an intelligence agency secretly recorded his Comey talks.
Trump's tweets on Thursday raised questions about why the president would have staked his reputation and political capital on promoting something that wasn't real.
Ben Cardin, ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told Reuters the change did not appear to substantively alter the legislation and that staff was reviewing it to determine how to move ahead.
"I was honestly concerned he might lie about the nature of our meetings, so I thought it important to document", Comey said.
