"I had a little damage, he risked damage".

It was an extraordinary performance from Stroll, the son of a billionaire, who faced heavy criticism earlier in the season.

When asked by Sky Sports after the race if he considered it risky driving on his part, he replied: "Nothing happened did it?"

The Finn was last after colliding with Kimi Raikkonen on turn two of the first lap but fought back and pipped Stroll on the final straight to take second.

Hamilton was then asked about quotes Vettel reportedly told German media that the swipe was him making a point about Formula One being a "sport for being men", Hamilton replied: "If he wants to prove that he's a man we should do it out of the vehicle face to face".

"I will talk with him away from here and we will move on from it", he said.

Vettel, who had claimed no wrongdoing over the team radio for the Hamilton incident, sat in his Ferrari blocks for 10 seconds but emerged ahead of an incandescent Hamilton.

In a stop-start race, the safety auto came out three times in quick succession before a red flag stopped the grand prix near the midway point because debris littered the track. It is all just noise in the background, I don't care.

"I had to overtake everyone".

"It just shows you should never give up. It was a shame Daniel was too far away at the end but in the circumstances it was a good result".

Vettel thought Hamilton had slammed the brakes on intentionally - which is known as brake-testing - which Hamilton denied.

But Bottas had to pit on the second lap for a new front wing, dropping to last, while Raikkonen complained of damage to the rear of his vehicle.

At about the same time, the safety vehicle came out for the first time because Daniil Kvyat's Toro Rosso was stalled on the side of the track.

"I had it last year when I had the flawless year and this year when I had some tough times".

The race was just about to start again when race control called for the safety vehicle to stay out, because of debris from Raikkonen's auto.

Then on lap 34 race control slapped Vettel with a 10-second stop-go penalty for "dangerous driving" for the incident with Hamilton.

Shortly before that, the Hamilton-Vettel incident occurred.

Following a 20-minute red-flag stoppage, Stroll found himself in fourth when Williams teammate Felipe Massa retired with a broken rear damper.

Within moments, the safety vehicle was out again for the third time after Sergio Perez and his Force India teammate Esteban Ocon collided. An irate Vettel then accelerated alongside Hamilton, gesticulated and moved his vehicle to the right and into him.

But this is the first time they have been main rivals for the title, and the pressure is showing.

Esteban Ocon of Force India was sixth ahead of Kevin Magnussen of Haas, Carlos Sainz of Toro Rosso, who also survived a first-lap collision, two-time champion Fernando Alonso, who scored McLaren's first points of the year in ninth, and Pascal Wehrlein of Sauber.

By lap 40 of the 51, Ricciardo had the lead which he would not surrender.
