Retired Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz addresses a gathering, where part of Yawkey Way was renamed David Ortiz Drive, Thursday, June 22, 2017, outside Fenway Park in Boston.

Ortiz's number will be the 11th to be retired at Fenway in what's sure to be an emotional and fun ceremony.

"Thank you, Lord for allowing me to give Boston the greatest gift ever, my compadre (companion) David Ortiz", Martinez said.

Boston personalities from Dustin Pedroia to Rob Gronkowski to comedians and actors gathered at a nightclub near Fenway for The Roast of David Ortiz. With three World Series titles - including the 2004 championship that ended an 86-year drought - Ortiz dragged the ballclub out of its dynasty of disappointment and gave a fresh generation of Bostonians reason to fall in love with the Red Sox anew. "You're family", Pedroia said. "I remember hitting batting practice on this field, I always was trying to hit those numbers".

Asked about his future with the organization, Ortiz said he has been in conversation with Boston's front office about a role with the team but hasn't hammered anything down yet.

After a bitter end to their road trip on Wednesday in Kansas City, the Red Sox open a seven-game home stretch with a three-game series against the Angels.

In addition to the newly named street, the Dominican playoff hero has also had the Brookline Ave Bridge renamed after him. "Obviously I would have liked to have finished the ballgame off better than I did, but I felt good from the get-go".
