Twins select Royce Lewis No. 1 overall in MLB Draft

Lewis is a pure hitter, playing both shortstop and outfield in high school. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Lewis was named the 2017 Gatorade Player of the Year in California and Trinity League Player of the Year for the third consecutive season.

Lewis was a standout on USA Baseball's gold medal-winning Under-18 team at the Pan American Championships past year.

Sixteen years had passed since the Twins last held the top pick in baseball's June amateur draft, so they milked the suspense until the final hour. Wisconsin-Milwaukee catcher Daulton Varsho, son of ex-big league outfielder Gary Varsho, went No. 68 to Arizona.

Minnesota has received picks in the top six spots in each of the last six drafts.

Hunter Greene, a California high school right-hander and shortstop, went second to the Cincinnati Reds.

Lewis had a request: He'd found a picture of himself, Greene and Kentucky high schooler Jordon Adell and thought it'd be cool for the three friends and high-level draft prospects to sign copies of it and each keep one. Greene throws four pitches for strikes, including a fastball that touches triple digits and a plus slider.

Kentucky's new law could allow student groups at high schools and colleges to reject LGBT people out of religious objections. Kamala Harris (D) quit the attorney general's office in January, is seeking election in 2018.

Greene was a two-way stud in high school, as he had enough power to win home run derbies and was dominant as a pitcher, throwing as hard as 102 miles per hour. He was also selected as this year's National High School Coaches Association's high school senior baseball athlete of year. Earlier Monday, McKay won a third consecutive John Olerud Award, given to the NCAA's top two-way player.

Greene went No. 2 to the Cincinnati Reds.

Atlanta selected Vanderbilt right-hander Kyle Wright with the No. 5 pick, looking to augment a large stable of touted arms already in the Braves' farm system. As a junior, he had a 1.63 ERA and 5-3 record in 55.2 innings.

University of Virginia juniors went back to back, as the Arizona Diamondbacks selected first baseman Pavin Smith at No. 7 and the Philadelphia Phillies picked center fielder Adam Haseley at No. 8. The Brewers own the ninth overall selection, as well as pick number-34 (Competitive Balance Round A) and number-46 (Second Round) that same night.

At No. 13, Miami took New Mexico high school lefty Trevor Rogers, who was also at the draft site and is the cousin of former Marlins outfielder Cody Ross. Even if he never becomes a big home run guy, he should have plenty of extra-base ability, sending line drives into the gaps and then using his plus speed to take extra bags, as well as steal them.
