MedStar Washington Hospital Center made the announcement on Tuesday, almost a week after a gunman opened fire on Scalise and his Republican colleagues at a baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

He "is beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation", the hospital said in a statement Wednesday.

The update on Scalise's condition comes just hours after the FBI gave an update on the investigation into the shooting that left six people injured. He received multiple units of blood and required additional operations, his office said. Mika was initially listed in critical condition following surgery, but his family said Saturday that he is expected to make a full recovery. Capitol Police Officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey as well as Tyson's Food lobbyist Matt Mika and congressional staffer Zack Barth were also wounded in the attack.
House Speaker Paul Ryan said he visited Scalise in the hospital Friday and saw him breathing on his own, talking and sending text messages.
Law enforcement officials identified the shooter as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, who later died from injuries sustained during a shootout with police on the scene.
