Though Rosenstein did not explain what prompted the statement, many political observers connected it to recent reports that special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the DOJ investigation into Russian election meddling, is also investigating whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice.

U.S. president Donald Trump appeared to confirm he is under investigation for obstruction of justice, as he lashed out at what he described as a "witch hunt" against him.

The fact that the president is being investigated is an astonishing development on its own.

There has been no indication that Mueller told Trump to fire Comey. Once the president fired Comey, though, things appear to have changed. The order by the general counsel for his transition team casts a wide net on documents that could shed light on ties between Trump's presidential campaign and representatives of Russia's government. Trump has also told friends and others that a "witch hunt" is being conducted against him. Now, that's no longer the case.

Comey had testified that during the meeting in which Trump allegedly asked him to drop the Flynn investigation, Sessions had left the room.

Who is the special counsel planning to talk to and why do they matter?

Comey was sacked by the president on May 9 while he was overseeing the investigation into potential Russian interference into last year's election and potential collusion with the Trump presidential campaign.

Indeed, it is only by virtue of Falcinelli’s prowess in the final third that Crotone still remains in contention to survive. In Romelu Lukaku, Koeman has a player with the capability of firing Everton to far headier heights than seventh place.

In a statement many have described as "odd", Rosenstein warned the USA public to "exercise caution" before trusting media reports citing anonymous officials, despite the fact that the Trump administration continues to use them in official statements to the media. This, too, could be a sign of the president acting inappropriately. The Post said investigators had requested interviews with CIA Director, Dan Coats, National Security Agency chief Michael Rogers and Richard Ledgett, the former NSA deputy director. It wasn't clear whether he was basing his tweet on direct knowledge or on media reports.

Moscow has denied any interference and the White House has denied any collusion.

Can the president really be charged? He lashed out at a top Justice Department official overseeing the inquiry, reflecting his mounting frustration with the unrelenting controversy that has consumed his early presidency. The responsibility would fall to Congress to review any findings of misconduct.

"He is a man of extraordinary independence and integrity. and great character", Vice President Mike Pence told reporters on Wednesday, noting that the longtime Justice Department official "came to work, sat down and made his recommendation" to fire Comey. The US president later said that the decision was taken due to "that Russian thing".

A weekend at the rustic mountain getaway is a far cry from the president's normal routine of jetting off to one of his lavish resorts, mainly Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

"I think the best thing to do is to let Robert Mueller do his job", House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said.

Comey said he believed Trump's advice to be a direction and thus felt uncomfortable by it.
