If they can get similar production out of Lewis, they'll be more than satisfied.

Greene, chosen as a pitcher, also played shortstop at Notre Dame High School. "I can't imagine what's going through an 18-year-old's brain right now, but he just wants to go out and have fun, and he makes this baseball field his playground".

Schmidt underwent Tommy John surgery in early May.

SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) - Hunter Greene was selected by Cincinnati as a pitcher, while Brendan McKay's bat attracted Tampa Bay.

With the first pick in the #MLBDraft, the #MNTwins select Royce Lewis!

The First-Year Player Draft covers three days from Monday through Wednesday and will take place at the Major League Baseball network Studio 42 in Secaucus, New Jersey.

Major League Baseball's annual draft of amateur players will be held Monday night and for the first time since 2001, the Minnesota Twins have the first overall pick.

"We know he's going to be a leader the second he steps on the field", Twins chief baseball officer Derek Falvey said.

Greene, chosen as a pitcher, also played shortstop at Notre Dame High School, but a fastball that can reach 100 miles per hour has the Reds projecting him as a future ace. LaVelle Neal, who covers the Twins for the Star Tribune, spoke to MPR News about the Twins and this year's draft.

"I think you use speed for everything: defensively, offensively, and it helps with range", Lewis said.

Many of those attending said they felt compelled to come after hearing about the attack in the news and on social media. Barakat's brother, Deah, was one of three young American Muslims shot to death in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 2015.

"I don't even know yet", he said, wearing a Cincinnati cap and jersey. "I think he profiles in center field".

With the Reds still immersed in a full-scale rebuilding effort, landing the player with the highest ceiling in the draft No. 2 overall is a huge win for the franchise.

Already there is talk he could be a designated hitter in the low minors when he's not pitching.

"Being young like this, it's pretty fantastic knowing I still have a lot of potential I haven't even tapped into yet". "We see him as an impact player on both sides of the ball and has the unique ability to impact the clubhouse".

The San Diego Padres took left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore of Whiteville (N.C.) High School with the third pick.

The No. 2 prospect in the draft, McKay is also gifted in a similar way.

He hit.324 with six home runs and 28 RBIs while playing a slick shortstop. As a junior, he had a 1.63 ERA and 5-3 record in 55.2 innings.

He sounded happy to have a chance to keep hitting, and the Rays said they plan to give him an opportunity to pitch in the minors as well.

After he was selected, Greene said on the MLB Network, "The Reds are awesome, I'm excited".

In a touching moment that drew a standing ovation from the former major leaguers serving as team representatives, 11-year-old Yankees fan Landis Sims - born without hands or feet - announced his favorite team's first-round selection: SC right-hander Clarke Schmidt at No. 16 overall. The recommended slot value for the first overall pick is roughly $7.7 million, and if the Twins spend all of that, they've used up more than half their draft-pool money on one player.
