In an interview with the FIA-published Auto magazine, Hamilton has hinted about potentially leaving the sport by the end of the season but played down the suggestion having seen former team-mate Nico Rosberg exit previous year.

And speaking Auto, Hamilton insisted that "destiny is in my own hands".

Lewis Hamilton completed a fourth career Grand Slam at the Canadian Grand Prix and will attempt to dominate again this weekend in Azerbaijan, where Nico Rosberg achieved that feat a year ago.

Hamilton and Vettel both have three wins from seven races, with champions Mercedes - despite trying to portray themselves as underdogs - ahead 4-3 thanks to Valtteri Bottas's win in Russian Federation. "Does that mean my legacy is less great than it would be if I stop in five years' time? So the plan is to make sure I deliver", he said in Montreal after closing the gap between him and Ferrari's championship leader Sebastian Vettel to 12 points.

"I wanted to get a trophy". The three-time world champion will also want to forget his first race at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. "So I think that mission or that mentality will create my legacy".

With Hamilton looking unstoppable and his teammate Valtteri Bottas having clocked the highest ever recorded speed in a Formula One session during qualifying in Baku last year with Williams, hitting 373 kph, the Finn could maybe outdo his teammate as he also has a much stronger vehicle than last year. Everything counts even more than before, and right now it's even more the case than before. There's a whole mental shift, the whole team's dynamic shifts in a powerful way.

"Now having another team, we are pulling together with that same drive - it's just so much more powerful, it's really awesome". But the timing of his rather ambiguous latest comments is odd, especially after team principal Toto Wolff claimed the driver is now in the "best place" he has ever been at Mercedes.

The 32-year-old is second on the all-time total wins list with 56, behind only the legendary Michael Schumacher (91), while the Brit is joint-second alongside Ayrton Senna with 65 pole positions. "He is still young so he has quite a few left in him", he told Sky F1 at the beginning of 2016.
