When several angry witnesses attempted to beat up the 47-year-old attacker who plowed his auto into a group of worshipers outside the Finsbury Park Mosque, an imam stepped in to prevent the man from being harmed, shouting, "No one touch him - no one!"

The 47 years old man responsible for ploughing through a crowd of Muslims attending evening Ramadan prayers in Finsbury Park, London, has been named as Darren Osborne from Cardiff. One elderly man, who had collapsed moments before the van appeared, was pronounced dead at the scene, although police have not yet confirmed whether he died as a result of the attack.

Flowers were left at the scene where hours earlier the 47-year-old van driver was pinned down by locals and shielded from violence by an imam, before being detained by police.

Here's what we know so far about the suspect.

Five residents identified images of the man being arrested as their neighbour, Osborne, who according to reports is originally from Weston.

British media report that some of Osborne's neighbors have described the father of four as "aggressive" and "strange".

A statement released by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) condemned what it described as a "terror attack". "As a mum my heart goes out to everyone in Finsbury Park", she was quoted by The Sun as saying.

One of Osborne's neighbors in Cardiff, Khadijh Sherazi, told the Guardian newspaper she had never had any problems with Osborne or his family until this weekend. "His missus had been out looking for him, I saw him wandering out of the woods.". Just everyday things like everyone else. "I just didn't think it is suspect anything or that his views were that strong and that he even hated Muslims, with us being Muslims as well next door".

The driver of the van has reportedly been arrested.

One neighbour said a man he thought was Mr Osborne had been seen sleeping in a van on Saturday night.
