Suspect shot after Brussels station explosion

Authorities are treating the incident as a "terrorist attack", said Erik Van Der Sypt, a spokesman for the federal prosecutor's office.

An explosion went off at a major Brussels train station Tuesday, and "an individual had to be neutralized" by soldiers, Belgian authorities said.

Belgian counter-terrorism police are probing the identity of a suspected suicide bomber shot dead by troops guarding a Brussels railway station after he set off explosives that failed to injure anyone.

"A spokeswoman for the city's prosecutor's office, Ine Van Wymersch, told VRT network no one else was injured and the damage was limited", Fox News reports.

There were reports of a loud bang at Brussels Central Station.

Belgian newspaper La Libre quoted prosecutors, who claimed the man was shot whilst wearing a rucksack and a bomb belt.

On 22 March of past year, three suicide bombers mounted twin attacks on the city's Zaventem airport and Maelbeek underground station.

Writing on Twitter he added: "Police now all over this like a rash but v impressed with private security guard with k9, he did the business securing the public".

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel and Interior Minister Jan Jambon are following the situation "very closely" from the crisis center, said the prime minister's spokesperson Frederic Cauderlier.

The blast has been classed as a terrorist attack after a suspected bomber detonated a device in the station.

Brussels was struck by a large-scale, coordinated terrorist attack a year ago, and the past few weeks have seen multiple incidents of deadly mass violence throughout Europe.

The city was targeted during a March 2016 attack by Islamic fundamentalists Isis. That person was neutralized by the soldiers that were on the scene.

The police say the incident is under control. Associates of those attackers, four months later, killed 32 people in their home city, including with bombs loaded on trolleys at Brussels Airport.

"And then in front of me, I could see a burning object, and then people started to run out of the station", said witness Rémy Bonnaffé.

He could only confirm that firefighters were at the scene.
