"We hope that North Korea and the United States can handle it appropriately".

President Donald Trump says the death of a 22-year-old college student who was detained for almost a year and a half in North Korea is a "total disgrace".

The president on Tuesday said that if Warmbier had been returned home to the U.S. earlier, "I think the result would have been a lot different".

President Donald Trump listens during a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in the Oval Office of the White House, Tuesday, June 20, 2017, in Washington.

The Warmbier family's "objection to an autopsy was honored", the office said, and only an external examination was performed.

"We can make speculations that there were many unjust and cruel treatments to Mr. Warmbier", he said.

They said Warmbier's severe brain injury was most likely - given his young age - to have been caused by cardiopulmonary arrest cutting the blood supply to the brain. Warmbier returned to the US last week in a coma after 17 months in North Korea.

The tour operator said that it was denied any opportunity to meet with Warmbier after his detention, and that the way it was handled was "appalling". Arizona Senator John McCain made headlines on Tuesday for calling Americans who still want to travel to North Korea "stupid".

The attacker's improvised explosive device could have caused "a lot of harm" if it had worked properly, the official said. Soldiers killed the man after he charged at them shouting " Allahu akbar ", Arabic for "God is great".

"The United States of America can not and should not tolerate the murder of its citizens by hostile powers", McCain said in a statement on Monday.

The 22-year-old was medically evacuated last week and was being treated at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center when he breathed his last on Monday.

The government of China, North Korea's main ally, said Warmbier's death was a tragedy.

The United States flew two supersonic bombers over the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday in a show of force against North Korea, South Korean officials said.

Dozens of North Korean missile launches and two nuclear bomb tests since the beginning of previous year have heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula.

Moon said that while "we can not know for sure that North Korea killed Mr Warmbier".

"I have great confidence that China will properly deal with North Korea".

On May 25, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) introduced the North Korea Travel Control Act that would ban any travel to the country unless authorized by the Secretary of the Treasury on an individual basis. If the North Koreans were smart they would release them all to atone for what they did with Otto [Warmbier], as a sign of contrition, a human rights gesture.
