Mrs. Warmbier could not attend the press conference today. He has not spoken or engaged in any purposeful movements or behaviors.

It's been too long for Warmbier to be considered in a coma, doctors, said. But it emerged as he traveled back home that Warmbier, a University of Virginia student, was in a coma.

Otto Warmbier, The American student imprisoned for nearly a year-and-a-half was "brutally treated for so long", his father said.

Warmbier, a University of Virginia student, was "brutalised and terrorised" by the North Korean regime, his father Fred Warmbier said at the news conference, two days after his son arrived in OH on a medical evacuation flight.

Kanter said Warmbier has "no signs of understanding language, responding to verbal commands, or awareness of surroundings".

"The North Koreans have a lot of explaining to do - they may have violated the Geneva Convention", Richardson told TIME. Pyongyang has vowed to develop a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting the USA mainland.

Physicians at the University of Cincinnati said Warmbier suffered "extensive loss of brain tissue" that has left him in a state of "unresponsive wakefulness".

In Warmbier's hometown of Wyoming, just outside of Cincinnati, residents tied ribbons to trees and said news of his release had sent waves of shock and joy through the community.

Fred Warmbier echoed the message of USA officials, who have said Rodman played no role in the release.

"He has spontaneous eye opening and blinking", said Dr. Daniel Kanter, director of neurocritical care for the University of Cincinnati Health system.

Manchester was also hit by a severe attack when a bomber killed more than 20 people at an Ariana Grande concert. Another witness, Abdikadar Warfa, said he helped to detain the suspect while his friends helped victims.

Warmbier was detained as he was leaving Pyongyang in January 2016, and was subsequently sentenced to 15 years of hard labor on the grounds that he attempted to steal a banner containing political slogans.

Fred Warmbier told Fox News on Wednesday his son had been brutalized and terrorized in the 17 months he spent in detention and that he has been in a coma for over a year.

"I call on them to release the other Americans being held". North Korean officials agreed to let Swedish officials visit Warmbier and three other American who are still being detained by North Korea. "No other family should have to endure what the Warmbiers have", he added.

When asked whether President Obama could have done more, Fred Warmbier replied: "I think the results speak for themselves".

Kanter said there is no way to tell for certain how Warmbier sustained his injuries.

A statement issued in NY by a Rodman publicist said the former National Basketball Association player is in the rare position of being friends with the leaders of both North Korea and the United States.

The 22-year-old University of Virginia student, who is now in a coma, was freed for humanitarian reasons, according to a one-line report from a North Korean news agency Thursday.

Fred Warmbier spoke to the media about his son Otto's comatose state and imprisonment by the North Korean regime. The state-run Korean Central News Agency on Thursday did not comment on his medical condition.

The Democrat and former USA ambassador to the United Nations credits the Department of State for working to get the student back home. The first video of Warmbier's return to the US has since come out, showing him being carried out of an aircraft in Cincinnati by two men. He called for an investigation, and urges a forceful response if the investigation finds North Korea covered up Otto's condition and he resultantly did not get proper treatment.
