"Americans should exercise caution before accepting as true any stories attributed to anonymous 'officials, ' particularly when they do not identify the country - let alone the branch or agency of government - with which the alleged sources supposedly are affiliated", Rosenstein said.
Brand was confirmed as the No. 3 Justice Department official on a 52-46 vote in the Senate on May 18, with Democrats lining up against her. That would make Rosenstein into an important witness for the Mueller investigation - which would in turn make it hard for him to be the figure to whom Mueller is supposed to report.
Mueller was appointed as special counsel to investigate Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion by Trump campaign associates with the Russians, but there has been no indication that Mueller told Trump to fire Comey.
It wasn't clear whether the president was basing his tweet on direct knowledge that he is under investigation, or on reports this week that special counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether the president obstructed justice by firing Comey last month amid the ongoing Russian Federation investigation. Last month, Rosenstein sent a memo to Trump raising concerns over FBI Director James Comey - concerns the White House then cited as a central reason for Comey's firing.
It was not clear what prompted the statement, although it came hours after The Washington Post reported that the business dealings of Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are being examined as part of Mueller's investigation. "He is not going to allow Trump to bully him into recusing himself or not recusing himself".
A day later, Mr Rosenstein appointed Mr Mueller - who was at the helm of the Federal Bureau of Investigation during the September 11 attacks - as special counsel.
Mr Rosenstein took over the investigation into whether Russian Federation interfered with the U.S. election after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself in March.

The UN and a host of worldwide allies have urged the protesters for restraint. The interior ministry said that it is unclear what caused the explosions.
Regardless of the chaos that could ensue in the leadership of the Justice Department, Mueller's investigation appears insulated, and much of the work of the department done by US attorneys across the country will continue, Cramer said.
The possibility of a second top Justice Department official recusing himself from the investigation comes after Trump appeared to criticize Rosenstein (and admit he was under investigation) on Friday. Right now, that's Dana Boente, who is also acting as head of the department's National Security Division.
Rosenstein has defended Mueller and said he wouldn't fire him without good cause.
After Boente, the responsibility would fall to the US attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina and then the USA attorney for the Northern District of Texas.
"You're not stopping this train", Cramer said.
"The message the president is sending through his tweets is that he believes the rule of law doesn't apply to him and that anyone who thinks otherwise will be fired", Feinstein said in a statement.
The transition official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss post-election decisions publicly.
