Trump couldn't resist referring to the probe's "Witch Hunt" a half hour later in a tweet that touted the economic recovery during his young presidency.

Leading American broadcaster CNN on Thursday filed a lawsuit in the federal court, urging the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to grant access to the former director James Comey's archived conversations with President Donald Trump.

Trump reverted to his first justification for firing Comey - the Rosenstein memo. Still, the snowballing investigation has deeply angered Trump, who denies he has any nefarious ties to Russian Federation.

For example, Wired's Garrett M. Graff reported, "it appears he has recruited an experienced Justice Department trial attorney, Lisa Page, a little-known figure outside the halls of Main Justice but one whose résumé boasts intriguing hints about where Mueller's Russian Federation investigation might lead". Cohen has worked for Trump since the mid-2000s and was active in the campaign.

The FBI probe, now in the hands of special prosecutor Robert Mueller, shifted its focus to allegations of obstruction in the days after Trump fired the agency's then director James Comey on May 9.

Rosenstein's statement was released immediately after the Washington Post reported that the leader of the Russian Federation investigation, special council Robert Mueller, was investigating the business dealings of Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and close advisor.

Mueller, who was appointed as special counsel by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on May 17, is investigating possible coordination between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign to influence the 2016 presidential election, and related matters. The Washington Post reported Wednesday that the investigators were looking into possible obstruction of justice.

Of the six in 10 Americans who think Trump tried to obstruct or impede the investigation, most are Democrats and independents.

Comey has told lawmakers to give the notes that he took after each of his nine meetings or phone calls with Trumps to Mueller.

Trump's tweets came after the top lawyer for his transition team warned the organization's officials to preserve all records and other materials related to the Russian Federation probe.

Trump responded to reports he is personally being investigated for obstruction of justice with a characteristic scorched earth defense: claiming mistreatment of historic proportions and calling into question the probity of his accusers.

The Twitter storm comes as it emerged Vice President Mike Pence had also hired a personal lawyer to represent him in the intensifying investigation.

The president tweeted Friday, "Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great".
