Doctors say Republican Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana remains in critical condition at a Washington hospital but is improving.
Scalise, 51, and four others were wounded when an IL man opened fire Wednesday morning on the team practice in Alexandria. The bullet that struck Scalise tore through his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding, the hospital said.

He refused to detail Scalise's injuries, but said that he would guess there are "hundreds of fragments" in Scalise and he has "no intention to remove all bullet fragments at this point" due to the high risk of looking for them.
After additional surgeries and rehabilitation, Scalise can be expected to walk "and hopefully run", Sava said.
"I feel a lot more optimistic than I do two or three days ago", Sava said. He suffered massive blood loss and was at "imminent risk of death" upon arriving at the hospital Wednesday.
But Scalise can hope to make an "excellent recovery", his trauma surgeon said Friday.

Scalise remains in critical condition at a hospital near the Capitol and has undergone multiple surgeries. Scalise was honored Thursday night during the annual congressional baseball game.
With an injury like the one Scalise endured, a patient is very likely to have long-term complications, although the complications would depend on exactly which body structures were injured, Evans said.
