Members of the US Congress took part in the traditional Republicans vs Democrats baseball game on Thursday, with many wearing hats to honour Steve Scalise, the congressman who was critically wounded by a gunman as his team practised a day before. But Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives, criticised some Republicans who have blamed the shooting on vitriol from the political left.
Dr. Jack Sava gave an update on Scalise's condition Friday afternoon and said Scalise was on the brink of death when he got to the hospital by helicopter Wednesday morning.
Hodgkinson, 66, opened fire at the Republican team as they practiced at a field in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday.
"He remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours", reads a statement provided Thursday by MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the medical facility now treating Scalise.
"Steve, in his own way, may have brought some unity to our long-divided country", Trump said in the Roosevelt Room.
The distraught wife of the USA man who shot a Republican congressman and four others at a baseball field told media "I can't believe he did this".
The charity game pitting Republican lawmakers against their Democratic colleagues was set to proceed as scheduled at 7:05 p.m. (2305 GMT) at Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball team, with thousands of spectators expected.
MedStar Washington Hospital, which is treating the congressman and Griner, said Scalise is suffering from fractured bones and injured internal organs.

The motive for the shooting remained unclear but authorities were zeroing in on the life of James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old man from IL, in the months and weeks before Wednesday morning's shooting.
Democrat Cedric Richmond, a fellow Louisiana congressman, said as many others did that Scalise is a fighter.
The charities are the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington, Washington Literacy Center, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and, after Wednesday's shooting, the Capitol Police Memorial Fund. "An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us", Ryan said, drawing a bipartisan standing ovation, CNN reports.
"I was there last night", he said.
