Paul Casey fights back after nightmare start to second round

Paul Casey, of England, reacts after his birdie on the 11th hole during the second round of the U.S. Open golf tournament Friday, June 16, 2017, at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis.

That isn't usually the game plan in the first round of a U.S. Open. "It's still Saturday - 36 holes is a very long time in a U.S. Open". No matter how fast you start or how many birdies you make, the pars are the ones that keep you in it.

"I've always liked when a course plays tougher". So maybe it makes sense that he's on the leaderboard after a birdie-filled first-round of the 117th U.S. Open at Erin Hills. "Again, it's great that we're helping to get the course together which needs to be done, but for everyone to network it's a great part of this", said Brian Chasensky, Chicago Golf Club. "Yeah, it was a bit of a roller coaster".

"You don't get many rounds at the U.S. Open that are stress-free", Fowler said.

Defending champion Dustin Johnson (+4), Rory McIlroy (+5) and Jason Day (+10) will all miss the weekend after their struggles.

Day, who won the 2015 PGA Championship up the road at Whistling Straits, had to birdie his last hole Thursday to break 80. When it was clear he had nothing going in the second round, he was simply trying to stay out of the way. He shot 75 and missed the cut.

Phil Mickelson officially withdrew from the U.S. Open field on Thursday to attend his daughter's high school graduation in California.

McIlroy, playing for the first time in a month to rest a nagging rib injury, finally got it going when it was too late. A run of 26 consecutive holes without a bogey ended when he rammed his long birdie putt on No. 9 about 12 feet by the hole and narrowly missed the par putt. That still didn't appear to be almost enough.

"Showed up for the last six holes, anyway", he said.

London Mayor Calls On Gov't To Cancel Trump's State Visit
In a television appearance on Monday, Khan said Trump was wrong about " many things" and indicated that his diplomatic visit should be cancelled.

The 44 under-par rounds broke the first-round mark of 39 at Medinah in 1990. Casey eagled the Par-5, 608-yard first hole and tallied six birdies.

And ironically, the only highlight of his round came when he took the fairway out of the equation, by driving the green at the 330 yards second hole, before draining a 28footer for a stunning eagle.

Casey did his part to set the pace, even after his triple bogey.

They surely could not be much worse though and may be spurred into a revival bid to make the cut so I will leave it up to Reed to deliver later in the day. His third shot went over the back of the green, and it took him five shots from there, including a chip that rolled back to his feet.

"I said to one of the other players 'why are they cheering three shots like that?'" - Andrew "Beef" Johnston, after all three players in his group missed the green with their tee shots at the Par 3 ninth, wondering why the crowd cheered them onto the green. Even just trying to take my medicine is very, very hard. It's a good eight in the end.

No one has accomplished such a feat since Bobby Jones swept the US and British Opens and Amateurs, the four biggest events of his day, in 1930. Even as the course slowly recovered from rain early in the week, reasonable scores were available.

Still to be determined was who made it to the weekend, and where the cut would fall. When the afternoon wave began, it was at 1 over with a possibility of going to 2 over, depending on the wind.

But there was no hope for Day and McIlroy.

The top six players in the world rankings all finished over par - a combined 21 over, in fact. What we do talk about is making sure we can adjust the course.
