G7 meeting on environment confirms split on climate between U.S., allies

On Monday, the United States refused to sign onto a pledge at a G7 environment ministers' meeting calling the Paris climate accord the "irreversible" global tool to address climate change.

USA allies in the G7 said on Monday that action to contain devastating climate change was irreversible and could even be accelerated, despite Donald Trump's decision to pull the United States out of the Paris accord.

"I believe engaging in worldwide discussion is of the utmost importance to the United States when it comes to environmental issues", Pruitt said in the statement.

The other G-7 ministers expressed disappointment at President Donald Trump's decision to pull the US out of the Paris Climate Accord, which seeks to limit carbon emissions and reduce the rising global temperatures.

Following the White House's decision to withdraw from Paris, local government officials and businesses have been drawing up their own plans to tackle climate change.

"Symbolically it is important that the U.S. remains in an environmentalist dynamic, even if it wants to maintain a degree of latitude on climate change and prefers a bilateral approach to a multilateral one on that issue".

"The only way in which you can deal with this challenge, the only way in which we can enhance the environment to pass on to our children in a better state is by working across borders".

In addition to the energy-related problems created by the Paris climate accord, there are numerous other ways in which it would create problems for people in the Plains states.

The head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt, had attended the first few hours of the summit Sunday, but then left to attend a Cabinet meeting in Washington. Yamamoto told Pruitt he wants to work with the US within the Paris framework.

Afghan soldier attacks foreign troops at base
Unconfirmed reports earlier indicated at least four United States soldiers were killed and as many were wounded in the attack. Last week three US soldiers were killed by an Afghan soldier in eastern Nangarhar province.

The rest of the G7 signed a statement that the Paris agreement "is essential and can provide us with significant opportunities for modernizing our economies, for enhancing competitiveness, and stimulating employment and growth, while securing social inclusion".

Ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) countries on Monday agreed to language on an array of environmental topics, while said that the United States stood apart from the other six countries on confronting climate change. However, the U.S. President announced the withdrawal four days later.

"Positions over the Paris accord are far apart. and will remain like that".

The US is the world's second biggest polluter after China.

The other six countries in the G-7 all agreed at last month's political summit of national leaders in Sicily to work toward making the Paris climate accord effective.

Minister McKenna's G7 counterparts expressed their appreciation for Canada's leadership and concrete actions to implement the Paris Agreement, including our commitment to put a price on pollution across the country. "We're looking to mend things", Galletti told reporters, without providing details.

Trump said earlier this month he intends to withdraw the US from the agreement unless it can be renegotiated. But U.S. business leaders in many sectors, including energy, technology and manufacturing, have embraced the treaty.

"If the G19 reaffirms their strong commitments to the Paris agreement - wow, you have the whole world", the G6 source said.
