While some of the victims begged for help, others simply accepted their fate and said their goodbyes.

Labour MP David Lammy confirmed her death, writing on Twitter: "May you rest in peace Khadija Saye".

Ms. Saye, a photographer, specialized in wet plate collodion tintypes, which produced dramatic and haunting images.

The artist Khadija Saye, whose work is now included in the Venice Biennale's Diaspora Pavilion, is among the many people missing following the deadly fire that broke out early this morning in a west London apartment building.

The 24-year-old lived on the 20th floor of the tower.

Green said she was communicating on Facebook: "She was saying she just can't get out and 'Please pray for me".

It goes on to say: "This work is based on the search for what gives meaning to our lives and what we hold onto in times of despair and life changing challenges". Please pray for me and my mum'.

"At one point she'd tried to leave again and it was impossible".

The Italian Foreign Ministry said two Italians are missing.

"The emergency services said to stay inside and put a blanket at the bottom of the front door to block smoke getting in, and we'll come and get you out".

At least 500 people lived in the 120-flat building, but it is not clear how many were in the tower block at the time of the blaze. She added: "I saw women and men flashing phones, flashing everything their hands, T-shirts, anything to say we're here".

But today friends told Sky News the artist had died.

"From a personal perspective, I like to hope it is not going to be triple figures".

A 12-year-old is still reportedly missing. Some of the 120 flats were sold off from the 1980s as part of Margaret Thatcher's "right to buy" policy, leaving a mixture of council tenants, private tenants and owner occupiers in the building - the exact mix of which is not known.

Jessica Urbano sounded panicked as she called her mother in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Witnesses said it seemed to be spread by the plastic cladding on the side of the building and those residents in the upper floors of the 24story building stood little chance of surviving. She had written on Facbeook: "It's been a real journey, tears shed, highs and lows, but mama, I'm an artist exhibiting at the Venice Biennale and the blessings are abundant!" "She was panicking. She said there was a fire".

The report was conducted following a 2009 blaze at another apartment tower, Lakanal House, in which six people died.

A 23-year-old Syrian refugee who had fled to Britain to escape violence in his home country is confirmed to have died in the Grenfell tragedy.

His older brother was rescued and is recovering in hospital. Frantic appeals from friends and relatives are still circulating as they desperately try to local their missing loved ones.

Health officials said 37 people were still in hospital, 17 of them in a critical condition.
