Authorities have said Scalise, the third-highest ranking Republican in the House, was shot by James Hodgkinson, an IL man who was apparently angry about Trump's election and policies the GOP is pursuing.

Scalise's alma mater is reportedly helping make the tribute possible.

In a national address, Trump appealed for unity following the morning assault in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia.

Four people were shot including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana who is still listed in critical condition. He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding. Officers in Scalise's security detail wounded Hodgkinson, who was taken into custody and later died.

Trump is also crediting the congressman for bringing people together.

"The president entered the room, spoke with Scalise's family members and sat by his bedside with Mrs. Trump", Press Secretary Sean Spicer said, describing the scene in the intensive care unit as emotional. Scalise was shot Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, . "Pray for Steve!" Trump tweeted.

The FBI said it had recovered and was processing a cellphone, a computer and a camera.

Shortly after the shooting, Bernie Sanders, the former candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, said on the Senate floor that the shooter apparently was a volunteer for his campaign a year ago. Investigators are still studying James T. Hodgkinson's social media profile and activities leading up to the attack.

"At one point in time, just for me, utter disbelief and intense fear", Fleischmann said.

Sanders swiftly responded to reports the suspect had volunteered on his presidential campaign. "I'm prayerful he will pull through, and I hope he does", he said.

"Let me be as clear as I can be".

Congressman Rodney Davis told CNN he was at the plate at the time, and Scalise was in the field at second base. "The next thing I remember was somebody on the field yelling, 'Run, he's got a gun'". He also had an arrest record that included charges for drunken driving, resisting a police officer, domestic battery and damaging property.

Lawmakers took cover in the dugout.

"I'm shaken up", Duncan said.
