Biggar starts for the Lions against the Highlanders on Tuesday night having recovered from the head knock he suffered against the Blues last week.
Warburton, the Lions captain, knows that he is playing catch-up on this tour as he strives to overcome an ankle injury.
'I think it's a bit harsh for him to say he's third choice from his point of view, ' said Farrell of Biggar's candid assessment of his own Lions status.
Warburton, who missed the Lions' 12-3 win over the Crusaders, joins a starting 15 which contains only one player - backrower C.J. Stander - who took part in Saturday's match at Christchurch.

Head coach Warren Gatland said: "Sam hadn't had a lot of rugby under his belt so it was important to get him involved for this game". He was happy with many aspects of the Lions' attacking game in Christchurch, especially their use of accurate kicking to get in behind the Crusaders defensive line. "I knew there was going to a better performance because they'd just had that time together".
"It's a nice luxury for the coaches and great competition for us as players". The win was also an endorsement of Gatland's selection which saw the first outing on tour for a lineup of near test-strength.
"I see it as I'm tour captain, and if I've made the Test then that would be a bonus for me, but I've said there are three Tests to get selected for so it's not the be-all and end-all with the first one".
