The DPRK has detained a handful of American citizens in the last ten years, and it isn't entirely clear why anyone would risk visiting there.

Lawmakers from Virginia also hailed Warmbier's release and denounced North Korea of its actions.

In a tearful statement made before his trial, Mr Warmbier told a gathering of reporters in Pyongyang he was offered a used auto worth $US10,000 ($13,200) if he could get a propaganda banner and was also told that if he was detained and didn't return, $US200,000 ($265,000) would be paid to his mother in the form of a charitable donation. During that journey, the colorful Hall of Famer criticized Korean-American Kenneth Bae, who was held captive in North Korea at the time.
The US had accused the North of using Warmbier as a political pawn, and condemned the sentence as far out of proportion to his alleged crime.
