U.S. Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa said the two U.S. Capitol police officers who were part of a detail there to protect Scalise and who returned fire with the shooter, were in "good condition".
Alexandria Police Chief Michael Brown said his officers arrived on the scene within two to three minutes and engaged the shooter. I thank the fearless Capitol Police Officers and Alexandria Police for their response to this horrific shooting. Scalise was later said to be stable and undergoing surgery.
In a message directed to Rep. Steve Scalise, the Louisiana Republican wounded in the attack, Trump said: "America is praying for you, and America is praying for all of the victims of this awful shooting".
During the baseball practice, a gunman opened fire and Wenstrup immediately went into medical mode, Alabama Rep. Mo Brooks said on CNN.
"There must have been 50 to 100 shots fired".
A second congressman Roger Williams was also injured, but it is unclear if he was shot or injured in some other way.
