After hitting four home runs, including his second career grand slam, in Cincinnati's 13-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Great American Ball Park, the 27-year-old utility player stood at his locker and tried to put an historic night in perspective.
And then, after a first-inning RBI single - the home runs are the headline, but Gennett tallied 10 RBIs, too, making him just the 14th player to do so in modern baseball history - the Red took Adam Wainwright deep in the third inning for the second grand slam of his career.
An unlikely outfielder (standsfielder?) snagged Scooter Gennett's record-breaking home run Tuesday.
- If Scott Schebler had been ready to return to the Reds' lineup, Gennett likely would not have started in left Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, the Brewers beat the San Francisco Giants, 5-2, with starter Chase Anderson pitching 7 2/3 shutout innings and Sogard - playing second base and batting leadoff - going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Scooter's big night: Gennett's night started modestly with an RBI single in the first inning, before getting much, much more interesting later on.
Gennett started the scoring for Cincinnati with a bloop single in the first to drive home Billy Hamilton, putting the Reds ahead 1-0.
Sessions to appear before Senate intelligence committee
Blumenthal was there in the audience Thursday as Comey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee. Sessions did not say in the letter whether his appearance would be in public or behind closed doors.
He had another swing at history on Wednesday night, a chance to become the first player with a homer in five consecutive at-bats. In the eighth, John Brebbia entered and, despite reaching an 0-2 count, hung a pitch up in the zone that Gennett deposited into the right-field seats. It was the first grand slam given up by Wainwright since 2012. Only 16 other Major League Baseball players have homered four times in a game.
"I was kind of laughing, to be honest with you", Gennett told reporters after the game. Mitch Moreland and Hanley Ramirez went back-to-back in the fourth, and Andrew Benintendi hit a long solo home run in the fifth.
ATLANTA - Aaron Nola allowed a run over eight innings, and Odubel Herrera doubled in the go-ahead run in the sixth as Philadelphia beat Atlanta.
The loss ended Detroit's four-game winning streak. He was drafted by the Brewers in 2009 and began his Major League Baseball career with four seasons for that organization, but Milwaukee waived Gennett this spring to make room for Jonathan Villar at second base.
Tim Adleman (4-2) gave up one run - on Stephen Piscotty's homer - in seven innings. He is only 9-11 against the Reds lifetime with a 5.01 ERA.
Sanchez led off the game with a shot to center field that landed in the field of play but was called a home run and upheld upon review.
Daniel Norris (3-3) gave up four runs - three earned - and five hits in six innings.
