Terrorism a major threat to humanity: PM Modi at SCO summit

A day before, Prime Minister Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the 17th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and discussed bilateral relations where the latter pointed out that the global environment was undergoing profound and complex changes.

"I have full confidence that the India-SCO cooperation will give a new direction and strength to the fight against terrorism", Mr Modi said.

The Declaration on the Establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization was singed in China's Shanghai in June 2001 by six founding states - Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The Afghan president opened the meeting with condemning the Wednesday terrorist attacks on Tehran and offered sympathies to and voicing solidarity with Iran's Leader, government, and people.

Pakistan on Friday formally became a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) during 17th meeting of the Heads of the State Council summit here in Astana.

Advisor to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz was also present in the meeting. "It is also important to ensure inclusivity and sustainability", the Prime Minister said.

"During the meeting, Xi pointed out that the current world situation is undergoing profound changes and China and India as two major developing countries in the world should focus more on cooperation and work alongside with each other to provide assistance to each other's developmental growth". It's understood that where India-China have differences they should not become disputes. "Instead of talking about counterweights and containment, let us create shared spaces for all".

Xi also congratulated India on becoming official member of the SCO, she said.

On Thursday, Nawaz Sharif met with President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. "India is having partnership with SCO countries in several aspects on energy, education, security, development partnership agriculture, minerals, capacity building, trade and investment are the main drivers". He urged the SCO member states to leave behind the legacy of peace and amity and not the toxic harvest of conflict and animosity.

Pakistan fully subscribes to the Charter of SCO and the "Shanghai Spirit".
