Labour invested heavily in their candidate Peter Chowney and the Greens agreed not to field a candidate in a bid to oust Ms Rudd.

The home secretary was declared the victor after securing 25,668 against Labour's Peter Chowney, who won 25,322.

Ms Rudd - first elected as an MP in 2010 - had looked as if she would be the first Cabinet minister to lose out.

"John I'm... I'm just hopeful, but not complacent", she replied.

Indeed, it is only by virtue of Falcinelli’s prowess in the final third that Crotone still remains in contention to survive. In Romelu Lukaku, Koeman has a player with the capability of firing Everton to far headier heights than seventh place.

"This is what really matters to me and this is what I hope to continue to deliver for the fantastic constituency of Hastings and Rye".

Ms Rudd was sent to represent the party in the leaders" debate, so if she failed to hold her seat it would be a "Portillo moment' similar to when the man tipped as a possible Tory leader lost his seat in 1997.

But Ms Rudd has faced hard questions over security and policing following the recent terrorist attacks in Manchester and London after it emerged two of those responsible had been on the radar of the security forces, of which she has overall charge.

Anthony Cheung said: "Amber Rudd calling for a recount with only 7 constituents declared.not looking good given she had almost 10 per cent advantage over Labour in 2015". Ms Rudd said: "I'm deeply honoured to have been re-elected for now a third time by the residents of Hastings and Rye". Plaid Cymru had three with the Green Party put on one.
