Utah suburb shooting leaves woman, child, male suspect dead

Nielsen says Rackley and her sons were in the vehicle of another woman who had stopped to pick them up as they walked home from the boys' elementary school after school ended for the day Tuesday.

The unidentified female driver picked up Rackley and her boys but her vehicle was then rammed by a pickup truck driven by Patterson, who got out and opened fire.

Another son, Myles Rackley, remained hospitalized two days later, though he's slowly recovering, said Jeff White, a family friend acting as their spokesman.

Police say Patterson and Rackley "did have some type of relationship, however the extent of the relationship is still under investigation at this time". After hearing screams and pounding at her front door, Peterson found a hysterical woman and three young girls cowering, one of the girls cov. A girl was hospitalized in stable condition.

Sandy police Sgt. Jason Nielsen said Wednesday that 32-year-old Jeremy Patterson shot himself after killing 39-year-old victim Memorez (MEM-or-ay) Rackley and her 6-year-old son.

Nielsen would not elaborate on why he called the driver who picked up the woman and children a good Samaritan, but said that information would be coming out.

The suspect lived in the nearby suburb of Draper, where neighbor Patricia Briennieson described him as a muscular man who looked like a body builder and had a mixed-martial arts sticker on the back window of his pickup truck.

The shooting took place on a neighborhood street in the suburb of Sandy, about 20 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. "I thought it was like a gun battle".

Authorities tell KSTU that it all unfolded on Tuesday afternoon after classes dismissed at Brookwood Elementary School.

Many students were walking home - some traveling west on the rolling Alta Canyon Drive, directly toward where the shooting would soon occur. Utah police say the shooter in a suburban Salt Lake City neighborhood is among several.

"I was panicking bad".

A Canyons School District Facebook post said "The District will make crisis counselors available tonight and all day tomorrow to assist students, staff and faculty who are dealing with hard emotions".
