The mother of Youssef Zaghba, an Italian-Moroccan who was one of the terrorists involved in Saturday's London Bridge attack, said Wednesday that she knew her son has been radicalised by Islamist extremists.
At least two of the men were known to British intelligence and law enforcement officials, raising questions about whether anything could have been done to stop the attack, which began Saturday when the men drove a rented van into a crowd and then leaped out to stab people who crossed their paths.
The Italian reports said Zaghba was intercepted at the Bologna airport a year ago as he was about to board a plane for Turkey, apparently with the intention of joining Islamic State militants in Syria.
Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera said Zaghba was born in Fez in January 1995 to a Moroccan father and Italian mother.
Police said they were still working to establish the identity of the third attacker.
Youssef Zaghba, 22, along with Khuram Butt, 27, and Rachid Radouane, 30 are believed to be the three men who carried out the attack that left seven people dead and 48 wounded.
At the time of the attack he was working in a London restaurant and continued to have contacts with his mother in Italy, which he visited a year ago. In the film, he was seen with a group unfurling a black-and-white flag associated with the Islamic State group.
The news came as detectives arrested another suspect at an address in Barking, east London.
London attack: What we know so farWho were the attackers? In particular, there are questions over whether investigators had the resources to look into complaints such as those levelled by Butt's neighbours about his attempts to radicalize children and whether crucial opportunities were missed.
Several people had alerted police to Butt's extremist views and he also appeared previous year in a documentary, "The Jihadis Next Door", in which he is shown unfurling a black-and-white flag associated with the Islamic State group. Redouane had not aroused any suspicions.
Competing realities: What James Comey said vs. what Donald Trump has said
TRUMP: "He wanted to have dinner because he wanted to stay on...." He never did, ceding the stage, for the moment, to his nemesis. It also appears that the firing of Comey was obstruction of justice in that it was done to end a pending criminal investigation.
London Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said Khuram was known to police and MI5.
He said: 'He (Butt) believed in one specific section of Islam which has very rigid and strict views. In a letter posted outside his gym, the Ummah Fitness Centre said staff would "help the police in any way we can".
Transport for London (TfL) confirmed that Butt worked for London Underground for just under six months as a trainee customer services assistant, leaving in October previous year.
Melissa McMullan only found out Monday the her brother was a victim, after his bank card was found on one of the bodies, D'Agata reports, and days after the attack, there are still a number of people who are missing or unidentified.
Since 2010, when the Conservatives entered government, the number of police officers has fallen from 145,948 to 126,766 in March 2016, according to Home Office figures cited by ITV.
The area around Borough Market is not expected to reopen Tuesday.
As investigators hunted for potential accomplices linked to the three attackers on Thursday, voters cast ballots in a British general election that has spotlighted security concerns.
A nationwide minute of silence was held at 11 a.m.to honor all the victims. "The issue of flagging (threats) is extremely complex and strictly tied to the amount of information that any one country is called on to process, which in some cases is an enormous amount".
Theresa May said a review had been launched after the Manchester bombing last month and she expected the same process following Saturday's rampage.
