Juncker says Europe can no longer 'outsource' protection

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said on Friday he hoped the result of Britain's elections would have "no major impact" on EU-UK divorce talks between the bloc and London, and advised London not to delay the start of negotiations.

President Trump has demanded that Nato's 22 European Union members hike spending to 2% of gross domestic product on military budgets.

Europe has to take care of its defense given the shift in U.S. policy, European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker said on Friday, promoting a hefty defense fund announced by Brussels.

"It's no longer a question of national sovereignty", Juncker said.

"We're different but have to complement each other in so many ways".

Besides increasing its defense, Juncker said North Atlantic Treaty Organisation remains crucial for the EU's security.

"Nato has been and will remain a cornerstone of European security", he said.

Although the European Union has more than a dozen military missions overseas, the world's biggest trading bloc has never been able to match its economic might with broad defensive power, preferring to rely on the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. It would be a disaster for the European Union.

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini says that after years of debates on defence "this is the time now to get things done".

"The decision has not been made, but I say that I am for it", he said.

"I see the tide turning", Juncker told a conference in Prague, citing growing support in European Union capitals for military cooperation, notably from French President Emmanuel Macron.
