Hunchback and Phantom of the Opera become part of Universal's Dark Universe

Now Universal Pictures is attempting to launch its own cinematic universe with its cast of classic monsters, including the likes of Dracula and the Phantom of the Opera. This information was revealed by the writer and director behind The Mummy, Alex Kurtzman, who shared the current list of movies that are going to be made by Universal as part of this universe of characters.

Universal really is beginning to ramp up its Dark Universe efforts, even though The Mummy hasn't even been released yet.

"On which characters are involved: We know we're going to do Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Invisible Man..."

Interestingly, Kurtzman also casually named Dracula, which has thus far been left out of the Dark Universe since Gary Shore's Dracula Untold starring Luke Evans was initially announced to be the first film of the cinematic universe.

"There are characters within those films that can grow and expand and maybe even spin off", Kurtzman added.

Both the possibilities of spin-off films and the unofficial announcement of two new and (apparently) top-secret films are creating quite the buzz for Universal's Dark Universe concept. Rumors are already swirling that Angelina Jolie should play the lead in "Bride of Frankenstein", while Kurtzman hints he'd be interested in casting actors Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Charlize Theron in other monster roles. Oscar victor Bill Condon will direct the Bride of Frankenstein, which will hit cinemas in February, 2019.

That's the first time Phantom and Hunchback have been mentioned in relation to the Dark Universe, so this is definitely exciting to hear. As reported by Screen Rant, the 2014 movie had to have reshoots so it will become more appropriate as the series' inaugural film.

Not all people are thrilled about having The Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame included in the world of monster movies.
