Hawaii becomes first state to enact law that aligns with Paris agreement

George Edgar, ambassador of the European Union to Cambodia, said the country is one of the most vulnerable to climate change, adding that the EU was spending millions of dollars on "targeted and ambitious" climate programs in the country.

Hawaii is joined by many other USA states and localities to declare that the Paris agreement would be honoured, with many governors and mayors signing executive orders or pledging to continue the fight.

Donald Trump's decision to take the United States out of the Paris climate agreement has been condemned by nearly all of the country's business community. We must acknowledge these realities at home.

Senate Bill 559 expands strategies and mechanisms to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the state by adopting goals outlined in the Paris agreement. "The Hawaii State Legislature understands the importance of taking action, and I applaud its work this session to ensure that we continue to deliver the island Earth that we want to leave to our children".

Colorado companies including Western Union, New Belgium Brewing and several ski resorts have joined hundreds of USA mayors, governors and chief executives, all promising to make good on the nation's commitment to reach climate goals set in Paris.
