Donald Trump contradicts himself, flusters Congress on Qatar

Qatar vehemently denies the accusations.

Trump wrote on Twitter that his recent trip to the Middle East was "already paying off" and cast an anti-Islamist speech he made in Saudi Arabia as the inspiration for a decision by Arab powers to sever ties with Qatar in protest at what they say is the Gulf nation's support for terrorism.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and others have severed diplomatic relations and cut off air, land and sea access to Qatar, in the most serious Gulf diplomatic crisis since the 1991 war against Iraq. "Leaders pointed to Qatar - look!"

'We have moved from breaking diplomatic relations to a comprehensive blockade of global conventions and human rights, not only for Qataris but also for citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, ' he said in press conference.

Qatar's longtime links to Iran also worry Saudi leaders.

But Qatar's Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Than, said: "There is no single evidence that the Qatar government is supporting radical Islamists".

The UAE's state-owned Etihad Airways, meanwhile, said all travellers holding Qatari passports were now prohibited from travelling to or transiting through the emirates on government instructions.
