Cornell died on Wednesday night after a Soundgarden concert in Detroit.

Billboard says in their glowing review of the gig that he was in "high spirits" and that "at no point during [the] concert could anyone at Detroit's Fox Theatre have guessed that lead singer Chris Cornell would be dead just a few hours later".

"Chris Cornell passed away late Wednesday night in Detroit, MI". Cornell, whom the BBC said grew up as "a loner, afflicted by agoraphobia and anxiety", knew a little something about that.

Sad new arrived this morning with the announcement of Chris Cornell's death, after being found unresponsive in his Detroit hotel room.

Cornell, with little formal training, had one of the music world's most wide-ranging voices.

Soundgarden predated both grunge pioneers Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but it wasn't an overnight success.

Soundgarden's third studio album, 1991's Badmotorfinger, spawned popular singles Jesus Christ Pose, Rusty Cage and Outshined that received regular play on alternative rock radio stations.

After the band broke up in 1997, Cornell pursued a solo career - though only for a few years.

In 2001, Cornell joined members of Rage Against The Machine to form Audioslave, which earned acclaim with its self-titled album that earned three-platinum status.

"We want to make sure that fans of Chris's music will have a place to go to remember his life and influences, and that's what our programming is going to be all about for the next couple of days". Soundgarden reformed in 2010 and released their sixth and final album, King Animal, in 2012.
